U17 Boys Spring Team

Coach: Ivor Lewis
Manager: Kim Thygesen
Special Assistant: Bill Laurin

It takes many things to be considered an “Elite” Basketball team. This Calgary Selects Panther basketball team consisting of Grade 10 and 11 boy’s, demonstrates several of these qualities, including determination, maturity, hard work, dedication and heart. They have a strong leader in their coach Ivor Lewis, and are all working to strengthen their bond as a team.

The first “May Madness” tournament was played in Spokane, WA and for the most part was a learning experience for the boys, as well as a good time to get to know each other a little better. The competition was extremely good, with three of the four games being played against “All-Star” teams from Yakima, Vancouver, and Montana.

The second tournament, the “Chinook Windbreaker”, held in Lethbridge, AB had its challenges, but the boys held their own, showing professionalism and poise, winning 2 of 3 games.

The “Calgary Selects Spring Classic” tournament in Calgary May 18-20 held many great moments for the Panther team. Successful wins in 4 of 4 games placed the boys in a 1st place tie with the JR Dino’s of Calgary. The final game, pitting these 2 top teams against one another was exciting to say the least. Both teams played extremely hard, demonstrating outstanding basketball skill. It was a hard fought game, the JR Dino’s being victorious.

The Panther’s remain undefeated and in 1st place in two U-17 spring leagues with a combined record of 10 wins, 0 losses showing 781 points for, versus 399 points against.

This young team has a lot of potential and are looking forward to the remaining 6 tournaments, where they will be aiming to hone their skills and demonstrate the high athletic level to which they are being trained. Their goal is to be able to compete against the best U-17 teams in the United States and win the last two tournaments of the year in Las Vegas Nevada.

After several challenging tryout evenings, the U-17 boys coach, Mr. Ivor Lewis, made some hard decisions and chose the final 12 members of this Elite basketball team. The 12 young men, in Coach Lewis' opinion, are some of the finest young athletes he has seen. He has high hopes for this young team, as do the parents of the boys. A full practice schedule is already in full swing with the boys looking ahead to a challenging and rewarding season. League games will commence in the middle of April with the team's first tournament scheduled for the first weekend of May in Seattle Washington. A full team roster will be posted soon, so watch the website for this, as well as for updates as to game and tournament schedules.
