Frequently Asked Questions
Can individual teams fundraise so the team can participate in further
activities outside of the standard program?
Absolutely, the standard program is there as a guideline, if you decide as
a team that you want to do more, then you have the option of dropping an
activity, for example do not participate in spring league but do an extra
tournament instead. You have the option of raising money by doing a cash
call, where all the players will pitch in the required money to fund the
extra activities. You also have the option of doing fundraising within the
team enviromment to raise the money required to fund the extra activity.
All money raised by the team in a fund raiser stays with the team. The
exception is the casino, which everyone is expected to help out with, that
is a club fundraiser and the money remains with the club.
Is there a fair play rule?
No, club basketball is highly competetive, and there is not a fair play
rule. The coaches are instructed to not select players for the team that
they know will not play in games, and the Calgary Selects does not support
the notion of "red shirt" players (players that practice with the team but
are excluded from games). It is expected that each player will see
playing time in every game unless there circumstances that warrant benching
a player. Your coach should be able to discuss this with you.
How many players will be on a team?
That decision is up to the coach at tryouts, but we base the registration
cost and team budget, on a team size of 10-12 players, and generally cap
the team at 12. We will allow teams with as few as 7 or 8 players to
proceed, however because of the decrease in player registration fees, there
is a chance that the season's activities will be adjusted to reflect the
reduced income or that the team will have to raise some addition funds to
cover the difference.
